Colonel Tahir Mustafa Appointed As New Registrar Of Jamia Hamdard

In a move widely seen as a response to administrative instability, Jamia Hamdard University has appointed Colonel Tahir Mustafa as its new Registrar on a deputation basis.

The university released the official notification on 26 July 2025 after internal discussions highlighted the institution’s urgent need for administrative restructuring.

Colonel Mustafa brings with him a distinguished military career, with particular expertise in strategic planning, geospatial technologies, and automated survey systems.

While serving at the Centre for Automated Military Survey (CAMS) under the Ministry of Defence, he led initiatives in digital mapping and operations management, earning a reputation for precision and clarity.

His appointment follows a tumultuous period for the university. Earlier this month, Jamia Hamdard shocked medical aspirants by withdrawing all 150 MBBS and 49 postgraduate medical seats for the 2025–26 session.

The university took this decision after NEET counselling had already begun, citing financial discrepancies and administrative irregularities at the Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (HIMSR).

Restoring Trust and Transparency

The university has tasked Colonel Mustafa with addressing the consequences of the seat withdrawal, rebuilding public confidence, and ensuring transparent governance.

His immediate responsibilities further include:

  • Addressing fallout from cancelled admissions
  • Launching institutional audits and reform
  • Coordinating with regulatory bodies and stakeholders

Faculty members and administrative staff have expressed cautious optimism, viewing his military discipline and crisis management experience as timely assets.

The academic community is closely watching this transition. A senior faculty member further noted, “The university requires both surgical reforms and strategic vision at this hour. Colonel Mustafa is well-prepared to deliver both.”

However, with growing calls for transparency and reform in higher education, Jamia Hamdard’s decision to place a seasoned military officer in charge of its administration may signal a broader shift in institutional governance models.

As the university navigates a difficult period, the success of this appointment could set a precedent for leadership in higher education beyond conventional academia.
