Indian Diaspora In Maldives Celebrates PM Modi’s Landmark Visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s State visit to the Maldives evoked an overwhelming response from the Indian community in Male.

Members of the diaspora described the occasion as a ‘proud’ and ‘exciting’ moment, emphasising that the visit would elevate India-Maldives relations to a new level and provide fresh opportunities for business and cultural exchange.

Anil Bhav, a community member waiting to meet the Prime Minister, said, “Modi ji is here, we are very thrilled. We feel that our godfather has arrived in the Maldives. After a challenging time between the two countries, he just made it look so easy.”

PM Modi, who arrived on Friday, was greeted by enthusiastic crowds chanting ‘Modi, Modi’ and ‘Narendra Modi zindabad’.

The Indian diaspora gathered in large numbers, waving and cheering as the Prime Minister acknowledged them with a warm smile and wave.

Another attendee said, “He is our PM, our proud leader, taking India to new heights. India is now one of the top economies of the world. His visit shows his affection for this country, and we are really excited.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi responded to the love and respect of the Indian Diaspora on his social media platform.

Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Interacted with the Indian community in the Maldives. It is commendable how they are contributing to Maldives’ progress and at the same time remain connected to their roots in India.”

“The Indian diaspora continues to be one of the strongest bridges between India and the world. We are very proud of our diaspora,” the post read.

PM Modi further noted, “Here are some more glimpses of the interaction with the Indian community in the Maldives.”

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The diaspora members emphasised the significance of the visit in rebuilding India-Maldives ties, especially after a period of strained relations.

“Rebuilding the relationship was crucial for business here. The trade agreement is a great support to the Maldives. India has once again proved that a friend in need is a friend indeed,” said another member of the community.

Jagannath, Chief Operating Officer of SBI in Male, added, “It is a proud moment for us to meet Prime Minister Modi. Meeting such a leader is an opportunity we may never have had in India.”

During the visit, PM Modi, alongside Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, inaugurated the newly constructed Ministry of Defence building in Male.

The event highlighted the growing strategic cooperation between the two nations and marked a significant step in strengthening defence and security partnerships in the region.

The Indian community expressed gratitude for the Prime Minister’s efforts to deepen bilateral ties and create opportunities for the business sector in the island nation. Many described the visit as historic, noting its potential to boost trade, cultural exchange, and people-to-people connections.

PM Modi’s landmark visit has not only rejuvenated India-Maldives relations but also reinforced the emotional bond between the Indian diaspora and their homeland, making it a memorable chapter in bilateral diplomacy.
