Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath issued an appeal to devotees attending the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, urging them to cooperate with the administration and avoid overcrowding. He specifically advised devotees to bathe at the nearest Ganga ghats instead of attempting to reach the ‘Sangam Nose’ area.

In his statement, posted on social media platform X, CM Yogi emphasized the importance of following the administration’s instructions for safety. “Take bath at the ghat of Mother Ganga near which you are, do not try to go towards Sangam Nose. Do not pay any attention to rumours,” he wrote.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with CM Yogi after the stampede-like situation on Wednesday. He called for immediate support measures. Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda also spoke with CM Yogi, offering full support, including volunteers and health services to manage the situation effectively.
Devotees Urged to Exercise Caution
Religious leaders also appealed to devotees to exercise caution. Swami Rambhadracharya, a prominent leader, urged devotees not to insist on bathing at the Sangam Nose but to bathe at the nearest ghat. He emphasized safety, advising people to stay near their camps. “Do not pay attention to any rumours,” he said, highlighting the importance of following the administration’s guidance.
Baba Ramdev, who had taken a symbolic bath, shared his message, saying, “Considering the massive gathering of crores of devotees, we have only taken a symbolic bath for now, while praying for the welfare of the entire nation and the world.” He urged devotees to practice self-discipline, avoid excessive enthusiasm, and take a holy dip with caution.
Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Swami Avdheshanand Giri of Juna Akhara echoed the same sentiment, stating, “Given the overwhelming crowds, saints have opted for a symbolic bath.”
Akhada Parishad President Ravindra Puri stated, “At this time, more than 12 crore devotees are present in Prayagraj. Managing such a massive crowd is a challenging task. With lakhs of saints and their followers also present, ensuring the safety of all devotees remains our top priority.”
Stampede Leads To Injuries
The stampede occurred about a kilometre from the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers when barricades broke, causing panic. At least 30 women were injured and received treatment at the central hospital within the Mela area. Some seriously injured were transferred to Bailey Hospital and Swaroop Rani Medical College.
The chaos led to the Akharas temporarily postponing the event. The Amrit Snan holds special significance this year due to the rare ‘Triveni Yog’ celestial alignment, which occurs once every 144 years. Authorities have heightened security, urging devotees to remain cautious.
