Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Saturday.

The ministers are meeting to discuss the current state of affairs in Manipur.

On Friday, the Supreme Court denied hearing an urgent petition challenging the suspension of internet services in the violence-torn state of Manipur since May 3, stating that the High Court is already dealing with the issue.

“The matter has been referred to the High Court. Why are you doing it again? Let it be heard by the regular bench”, ordered a vacation bench of Justices, Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal.

The internet ban was enforced on May 3 and is still in effect.

On March 27, the High Court urged the State to consider adding the Meitei community to the list of Scheduled Tribes.

The violence in Manipur between Hindu Meiteis and tribal Kuki Christians erupted on May 3 following a protest by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM).

Previously, the Supreme Court expressed concern about the loss of lives and property in Manipur during the unrest between the Meitei and Kuki groups, emphasizing the importance of taking necessary measures to restore normality there.

For more than a month, violence has seized the whole state, forcing the central government to deploy paramilitary forces to put the situation under control.
