Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met PM Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Tuesday and handed over a message and an invitation from President Xi Jinping for the upcoming SCO Summit in Tianjin later this month.

Wang Yi, a Politburo member of the Communist Party of China, also conveyed his positive assessment of his bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and the 24th Meeting of Special Representatives, which he co-chaired with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his two-day visit.

PM Modi Highlights Progress in Ties

After the meeting, PM Modi posted on X, “Glad to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Since my meeting with President Xi in Kazan last year, India-China relations have made steady progress guided by respect for each other’s interests and sensitivities. I look forward to our next meeting in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. Stable, predictable, constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional as well as global peace and prosperity.”

Border Peace Remains a Priority

During the discussions, PM Modi stressed the importance of peace and tranquillity on the border and reaffirmed India’s commitment to finding a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary issue.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Modi welcomed the ‘steady and positive progress in bilateral ties since his meeting with President Xi in Kazan, guided by mutual respect, mutual interest, and mutual sensitivity, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra’.

PM Modi Accepts Invitation to SCO Summit

The PMO further confirmed that PM Modi thanked President Xi for the SCO Summit invitation and conveyed his acceptance. Prime Minister Modi expressed support for China’s Presidency of the SCO and said he looked forward to meeting Xi Jinping in Tianjin.

“The Prime Minister underlined that stable, predictable, and constructive ties between India and China will contribute significantly to regional and global peace and prosperity,” the PMO statement added.
