On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Health and Family Welfare Minister and BJP President JP Nadda, along with several other dignitaries, honoured the late Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur (1923–1947), the final ruler of the former princely state of Tripura.
The Tripura government has, however, organised a series of events to mark the 117th birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, widely recognised as the architect of modern Tripura.
Taking to X, PM Modi posted, “Remembering Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur Ji on his birth anniversary. He is admired for his exemplary efforts in developing Tripura. His passion for public service, commitment to empowering the poor and dedication to social upliftment continue to inspire us greatly. The Central Government and the Government of Tripura are working tirelessly to realise his vision.”

On his Jayanti, Home Minister Amit Shah also paid homage to Tripura’s Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, remembering him as the ‘Architect of Modern Tripura’.
He further noted that the Maharaja’s farsighted reforms in education, infrastructure, and governance laid the foundation for the state’s progress and that his legacy continues to inspire generations.

State Recognition and Historical Significance
Since the BJP came to power in Tripura in 2018, the government has officially recognised the birth anniversary of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur as a state holiday from 2019 onwards.
Historians remember Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore, born on 19 August 1908, as the most accomplished ruler of the Manikya dynasty.
Following the 517-year rule of the Manikya kings, Tripura became part of India on 15 October 1949 when Kanchan Prabha Devi, the then regent Maharani, signed a merger agreement with the Indian Governor-General.
