Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud has proposed the appointment of Justice Sanjeev Khanna as the 51st Chief Justice of India. In a letter to the Central Government, Justice Chandrachud stated that Justice Khanna is set to take over the position following his retirement on November 10, 2024.

As the head of the Supreme Court Collegium, Justice Chandrachud plays a crucial role in recommending appointments for judges in the Supreme Court and all High Courts across the country. He has served as Chief Justice for two years and is now recommending his successor before his departure.

Pending approval from the Central Government, Justice Sanjeev Khanna is expected to assume the role of Chief Justice on November 11, 2024. His tenure is anticipated to last six months, concluding on May 13, 2025.

Justice Khanna boasts a distinguished legal career, beginning at the Tis Hazari Court after enrolling with the Delhi Bar Council in 1983. He has amassed extensive experience in constitutional, criminal, and commercial law while serving in the Delhi High Court. In 2005, he was appointed as an additional judge in the Delhi High Court and became a permanent judge the following year. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in January 2019, a move that sparked some controversy due to his direct appointment despite the presence of senior judges in line for the position.

The transition in leadership at the Supreme Court comes at a significant time, with Justice Chandrachud’s tenure marked by efforts to enhance judicial transparency and efficiency.
