Chennai Grapples with Cyclone Michaung Impact: Heavy Rain, Flight Disruptions, and Closed Runway

Cyclone Michaung, currently swirling over the Bay of Bengal, is heading towards the Andhra coast, bringing torrential rain to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. North coastal Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Cuddalore districts, has experienced heavy rainfall, with Thiruvallur district facing the most significant impact.

In Chennai, widespread flooding is reported, particularly in low-lying areas, as heavy rainfall continues. Meenambakkam recorded 196 mm, and Nungambakkam received 154.3 mm in the 24 hours leading up to 5:30 am.

Anticipating the cyclone’s landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam tomorrow noon, precautionary measures are in place. Schools, colleges, and government offices in Chennai and three adjoining districts are closed today. Private companies are encouraged to enable employees to work from home.

Nearly 5,000 relief centers have been established in coastal districts to aid those affected by the overnight heavy rain. Chief Minister MK Stalin is actively monitoring the situation, emphasizing adherence to safety protocols and urging the public to stay indoors unless necessary.

Bridge No.14 between Basin Bridge and Vyasarpadi is temporarily closed for public safety, resulting in the cancellation of six trains from Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station. Passengers affected will receive full refunds.

Fourteen subways are closed due to severe waterlogging, and the Chennai airport is impacted, with flight cancellations and diversions. The runway will remain closed until 11 pm today.

To enhance relief and rescue efforts, eight NDRF and nine SDRF teams are stationed in affected districts. Water discharge from the Chembarambakkam reservoir has been reduced to 1500 cusecs to mitigate flooding risks in low-lying areas. Chief Minister Stalin assures readiness to face Cyclone Michaung and urges public cooperation with safety measures.
