Chandigarh Consumer Commission Fines Uber India ₹20,000 For Overcharged Ride

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Chandigarh has fined Uber India ₹20,000. The Commission ordered Uber India to compensate a customer named Ashwani Prashar with ₹10,000 and deposit another ₹10,000 into the legal aid account. According to The Indian Express, Prashar raised a complaint after being charged ₹1,334 for an 8.83 km ride with Uber.

In his complaint, Chandigarh resident Prashar stated that he utilized the Uber ride-hailing app on August 6, 2021. He alleged that despite the ride being only 15 minutes long, covering a distance of 8.83 km from AG Colony, Audit Phool Colony, Sector 41-B, Chandigarh to Sector 48-B, Chandigarh, he was charged ₹1,334, equating to approximately ₹150 per km. Prashar filed the complaint after his attempts to address the issue with Uber through chats and emails went unanswered.

In response, Uber India defended itself by stating that the initial fare displayed to the rider was ₹359. However, due to multiple route deviations during the journey, the final fare amounted to ₹1,334. Uber India argued that it could not ascertain whether these deviations were initiated by the rider or the driver and therefore cannot be held responsible. The company emphasized its role as an intermediary between the rider and the driver, asserting that it is not party to any agreements regarding the journey route.

As a gesture of goodwill and to uphold the trust of the rider in the platform’s reliability, Uber refunded ₹975 in Uber Credits to Prashar’s account, considering it was a cash trip.
