PM Modi Engages In Delegation-Level Talks With Argentine President Milei; Strengthens Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held delegation-level talks with Argentine President Javier Milei at the historic Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires on Saturday.

The meeting marked a significant milestone in the Prime Minister’s official visit to Argentina — the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the South American nation in 57 years.

President Milei greeted Prime Minister Modi with a warm embrace, symbolising the growing friendship between the two nations.

Prior to their talks, PM Modi paid homage to General José de San Martin at the Monumento al General San Martin, an iconic equestrian statue honouring the liberator of Argentina, Chile, and Peru.

His visit to the memorial highlighted India’s respect for global champions of freedom and independence.

Diaspora engagement

Upon arrival at his hotel in Buenos Aires, Prime Minister Modi was warmly welcomed by members of the Indian diaspora.

Local artists and community members celebrated his visit with a vibrant traditional dance performance. The crowd, filled with emotion, chanted ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and ‘Modi-Modi,’ reflecting their deep pride and connection with India.

Expressing gratitude, PM Modi posted on X, “Distance is no barrier when it comes to cultural connect! Honoured by the gracious welcome from the Indian community in Buenos Aires.”

Focus on strategic partnerships

During the high-level talks, both leaders reviewed ongoing cooperation and explored avenues to further deepen the India-Argentina partnership.

Discussions spanned critical sectors including defence manufacturing, agriculture, mining, oil and gas, renewable energy, digital infrastructure, and people-to-people ties.

India and Argentina have steadily strengthened bilateral engagement in recent years, with trade reaching USD 5.23 billion in 2024.

The two countries have also forged important links in the mineral resources sector, especially in lithium — vital for India’s green energy transition.

PM Modi’s visit to Argentina comes at a time when the country is implementing economic reforms similar to those undertaken by India in the past.

The meeting offered an opportunity to share experiences and identify collaborative projects that benefit both nations.

With Argentina holding vast reserves of shale gas, oil, and critical minerals, India sees the country as a key energy and trade partner for the future.

PM Modi’s visit not only reinforces strategic cooperation but also energises the cultural and emotional bonds shared by the Indian diaspora with their homeland.

The Prime Minister’s engagements in Buenos Aires have set the tone for deeper and broader collaboration between the two democracies in the years ahead.
