Centre Expands 5-Kg LPG Supply For Migrant Workers, Daily Allocation Doubled

The Centre has decided to double the daily allocation of 5-kg free trade LPG (FTL) cylinders for migrant labourers across states, according to an official communication aimed at strengthening fuel access for vulnerable groups.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas stated that the enhanced allocation will be determined based on the average daily supply of cylinders already being provided to migrant workers. This revision goes beyond the earlier cap of 20 per cent announced in March.

The government said the additional 5-kg FTL cylinders will be placed at the disposal of state governments and their Food and Civil Supplies Departments. Distribution will be carried out exclusively for migrant labourers with the support of oil marketing companies (OMCs).

Earlier, the Centre had emphasised its efforts to ensure uninterrupted availability of petrol, diesel and LPG in view of the prevailing geopolitical situation. Citizens were advised to avoid panic buying and rely on official sources for accurate information.

Consumers were also encouraged to adopt digital platforms for LPG bookings and limit visits to distributors unless necessary.

Supply Measures And Demand Management

The government has prioritised domestic LPG and PNG supply, along with essential sectors such as hospitals and educational institutions. It has also implemented multiple demand and supply-side measures, including boosting refinery output and extending LPG booking intervals to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural regions.

To ease pressure on LPG demand, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been made available, while states have been advised to expand PNG connections.

Authorities reiterated that there has been no disruption in LPG supply affecting migrant workers. Official data shows that around 51 lakh domestic LPG cylinders were delivered recently, with online bookings accounting for 95 per cent and authentication-based delivery systems significantly increasing to prevent diversion.
