The Centre has allocated Rs 2,010 crore in the Union Budget 2026 to strengthen judicial infrastructure and modernise courts through digitisation initiatives, including training and capacity-building programmes.
In a written reply in the Lok Sabha, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal said the Centre has earmarked Rs 810 crore under the Centrally Sponsored Scheme (CSS) for Development of Infrastructure Facilities for the District and Subordinate Courts.
An additional Rs 1,200 crore will support the eCourts Project Phase-III, which aims to digitise courts and support related training programmes.
The Minister said both schemes have adequate budgetary provisions based on approved outlays and fund availability.
“The expeditious disposal of cases depends on multiple factors including complexity of case, quality of investigation, availability of relevant evidence and presentation thereof by the Advocates, timely delivery of the court processes, active participation of the parties, judicial procedures, etc,” he stated.
The government, in coordination with state governments and the judiciary, has undertaken several initiatives to improve access to justice and ensure the speedy and effective disposal of cases across the country.
The Minister also highlighted the Centrally Sponsored Scheme for Fast Track Special Courts (FTSCs), including exclusive POCSO (e-POCSO) Courts, which was launched in October 2019 for the speedy trial of rape cases and offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
The scheme received two extensions. The latest extension was originally valid until March 31, 2026, and now remains in effect until September 30, 2026.
According to information provided by the High Courts, 775 FTSCs, including 398 exclusive e-POCSO Courts, were functional across 29 States and Union Territories as of April 30.
