The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs) and 28 Navodaya Vidyalayas (NVs). This decision aims to boost access to quality education nationwide.
Funding and Job Creation
The government will invest Rs 5,872.08 crore to establish 85 KVs and expand one existing KV over eight years starting 2025-26. This includes Rs 2,862.71 crore for infrastructure and Rs 3,009.37 crore for operations.
It has also allocated Rs 2,359.82 crore to set up 28 NVs over five years starting 2024-25. This includes Rs 1,944.19 crore for capital expenses and Rs 415.63 crore for operations.
The new KVs will create 5,388 permanent jobs. Construction activities will also generate work for skilled and unskilled labor.
Boosting Educational Reach
Currently, 1,256 KVs serve 13.56 lakh students, including three schools abroad. The new schools will add capacity for 82,560 students. Each KV will accommodate 960 students and employ 63 staff members.
Established in 1962, KVs cater to children of Central Government and Defence employees. Their innovative teaching and strong CBSE performance make them highly sought after. Almost all KVs now function as PM Shri Schools under the National Education Policy 2020, setting standards for quality education.
The government’s focus on the expansion of Kendriya Vidyalayas highlights its commitment to improving education for all.
