BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi, Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim Hold Bilateral Talks

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in New Delhi on Saturday on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit.

The discussions centred on strengthening the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and unlocking fresh opportunities across several strategic and emerging sectors.

“Maritime neighbours, close partners and a friendship powered by our people. Delighted to meet PM Anwar Ibrahim. India-Malaysia ties are moving into ambitious new areas like semiconductors, critical minerals, clean energy, infrastructure and talent mobility,” PM Modi said after the meeting.

The Prime Minister pointed to stronger defence cooperation, rising bilateral investments and increasingly close links between the people of the two countries.

PM Modi welcomed Malaysia’s participation in the BRICS Summit as a Partner Country and reviewed developments following his February 2026 visit to Malaysia.

The leaders examined cooperation in trade, investment, defence, security, semiconductors, infrastructure, digital economy, energy, fintech, education, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

Consulate General in Sabah

PM Anwar conveyed Malaysia’s concurrence with India’s proposal to establish a Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

The Ministry of External Affairs said PM Modi valued Malaysia’s continued efforts to strengthen ASEAN-India relations. The leaders, however, exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

PM Anwar thanked PM Modi for the ‘exceptional service’ extended to the Malaysian delegation following its arrival in New Delhi on Friday.

The Malaysian Prime Minister said both countries would sustain the momentum in bilateral relations while giving particular attention to semiconductor cooperation. He identified industrial collaboration, integrated supply chains, talent development and two-way investments as key areas where India and Malaysia could combine their respective strengths.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said improved market access could create additional opportunities for Malaysian companies while strengthening economic cooperation and supporting prosperity in both countries.
