The meeting followed the elevation of India-Vietnam ties to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during Vietnamese President To Lam’s visit to India in May 2026.
PM Modi welcomed Vietnam’s participation in the BRICS Summit as a partner country.
India and Vietnam share longstanding ties based on civilisational links, mutual trust and close cooperation.
Vietnam remains an important pillar of India’s Act East Policy and a key partner in India’s engagement with Southeast Asia.
India is hosting the two-day BRICS Summit as the grouping’s 2026 Chair.
The summit follows the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, reflecting PM Modi’s people-centric vision rooted in ‘Humanity First’. Leaders are discussing ways to strengthen BRICS cooperation and address regional and global challenges.
BRICS comprises 11 members, while Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam are partner countries.
Last month, Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita met PM Hung and discussed ways to advance bilateral cooperation and implement high-level commitments.
During To Lam’s May visit, India and Vietnam discussed defence, trade, technology, maritime cooperation, critical minerals, energy and people-to-people ties. They set a $25 billion trade target by 2030, while Vietnam joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.
