Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday and reviewed progress in cooperation across several sectors.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to advancing the India-Malaysia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
PM Anwar conveyed Malaysia’s concurrence with India’s proposal to establish a Consulate General in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
PM Modi welcomed PM Anwar to India and appreciated Malaysia’s participation in the BRICS Summit as a Partner Country.
The leaders reviewed the outcomes of PM Modi’s visit to Malaysia in February 2026 and assessed progress in trade and investment, defence and security, semiconductors, infrastructure, digital economy, energy, fintech, education, tourism and people-to-people ties.
PM Modi and PM Anwar discussed regional and global issues, with PM Modi appreciating Malaysia’s support for stronger India-ASEAN ties.
Malaysia backed deeper defence cooperation, including joint training and defence procurement, and explored semiconductor opportunities with India.
PM Anwar arrived in New Delhi on Friday for the BRICS Summit and was received by MoS Kirti Vardhan Singh.
The MEA further highlighted India-Malaysia ties in trade, investment, digital economy, defence and security.
PM Anwar will visit Kerala to meet India’s Grand Mufti.
India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit under its 2026 Chairship with the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’.
