Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday and discussed ways to strengthen the India-Ethiopia Strategic Partnership.

The two leaders reviewed progress in key areas, including economic cooperation, defence and security, and capacity building, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).

PM Modi and PM Abiy exchanged views on regional and international developments of mutual interest and reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation on multilateral platforms.

PM Modi appreciated Ethiopia’s participation in the 18th BRICS Summit and said its presence would help strengthen the collective voice of the Global South.

Government sources said Ethiopia expressed interest in expanding defence cooperation with India and welcomed greater participation by Indian industry and investment, particularly from Indian mining companies.

PM Abiy arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the BRICS Summit. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received the Ethiopian Prime Minister at the airport.

India is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi as the grouping’s 2026 Chair.

The summit follows the theme ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, reflecting PM Modi’s people-centric approach rooted in ‘Humanity First’.

The summit, however, focuses on cooperation among BRICS members and partners.

PM Modi visited Ethiopia in December, where he met PM Abiy, addressed Parliament and received Ethiopia’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’.
