Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Ethiopian counterpart, Abiy Ahmed Ali, held bilateral talks at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Saturday ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit.

The two leaders discussed the full range of India-Ethiopia bilateral relations and explored areas of mutual interest.

PM Modi and PM Abiy shared a warm hug as they arrived at Hyderabad House for the meeting.

PM Abiy Ahmed Ali arrived in New Delhi on Friday to attend the two-day 18th BRICS Summit. Minister of State for Defence Sanjay Seth received the Ethiopian Prime Minister upon his arrival.

India, which holds the BRICS Chairship in 2026, is hosting the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi on September 12 and 13.

India’s BRICS 2026 theme is ‘Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability’, centred on the ‘Humanity First’ approach.

PM Modi and PM Abiy are also expected to discuss global issues and strengthen BRICS cooperation. BRICS has 11 members and 10 partner countries.

India and Ethiopia have maintained close and longstanding relations, with cooperation spanning several areas.

In June, PM Modi congratulated PM Abiy and Ethiopia’s Prosperity Party on their victory in the country’s parliamentary elections.

India and Ethiopia aim to strengthen their strategic partnership and people-to-people ties.

PM Modi visited Ethiopia last December, where he held talks with PM Abiy, addressed Parliament and received the country’s highest civilian honour, the ‘Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia’.
