BRICS Summit 2026: PM Modi, Burundi President Discuss Stronger Bilateral Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Burundi President Evariste Ndayishimiye in New Delhi on Sunday and discussed measures to expand bilateral ties during the 18th BRICS Summit.

PM Modi and Ndayishimiye assessed the broader India-Africa partnership and recalled New Delhi’s efforts to bring the African Union into the G20 during India’s presidency of the grouping in 2023.

Both leaders identified India-African Union cooperation as an important pillar of the Global South partnership. They discussed convening the fourth India-Africa Forum Summit at a mutually convenient time.

The two sides reviewed bilateral engagement in economic cooperation, development partnerships, agricultural modernisation, healthcare and capacity-building programmes.

The leaders discussed the African Union’s efforts to tackle the Ebola outbreak.

PM Modi commended the AU leadership for its response, while the Burundi President acknowledged India’s medical assistance to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.

India hosted the 18th BRICS Summit at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi as the group’s chair for 2026.

The two-day gathering brought together leaders representing BRICS members, partner nations and outreach invitees.

The BRICS membership comprises Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates. Belarus, Cuba, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan and Vietnam form the partner-country group.

PM Modi maintained an intensive diplomatic schedule during the summit and conducted 15 formal bilateral meetings with visiting heads of state and government between Friday and Sunday afternoon. He further engaged with world leaders and senior representatives of international institutions through several pull-aside meetings held alongside the BRICS sessions and the Outreach/BRICS Plus Dialogue.
