Boong competed against international titles such as Arco, Lilo & Stitch and Zootropolis 2, securing a landmark win for regional Indian cinema.
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, the film follows a boy’s quest to reunite his family amid tensions in Manipur. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to critical acclaim.
BAFTA shared a video of the director’s emotional acceptance speech, which she began with ‘Kurumjari’.
She thanked the BAFTA jury for showing ‘big love’ to what she described as a very small film. Calling the project a homage to her homeland, she emphasised that Manipur remains a troubled, often ignored and underrepresented region of India.
