BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj criticized Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for not resigning immediately after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). Kejriwal announced his intention to resign within two days following his release from jail on Friday.
Calls for Immediate Resignation
In an interview with IANS, Swaraj stated, “Arvind Kejriwal should have resigned 177 days ago when he was arrested. The Supreme Court had hinted at this, but he has only now announced his resignation. Why does he need 48 hours? Is there a competition for power within his party?”
Swaraj emphasized that the courts had repeatedly upheld Kejriwal’s arrest, citing solid evidence from investigative agencies. She argued that the bail was granted due to procedural technicalities and that Kejriwal remains an accused.
Criticism of Kejriwal’s Political Plans
Swaraj also addressed Kejriwal’s plan to seek early elections for the Delhi Assembly, possibly by November. She accused Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party of failing to deliver results for Delhi residents over the past decade. She pointed out that the people of Delhi had rejected Kejriwal’s campaign in the recent Lok Sabha elections, with the BJP winning all seven seats.
Regarding the prospect of early elections, Swaraj suggested that Kejriwal and his cabinet should resign to pave the way for Assembly polls. She concluded, “It is up to Kejriwal to decide if he wants to call for early elections.”
Kejriwal had been arrested by the ED on March 21, 2024, following a denial of protection against “coercive action” by the Delhi High Court.
