A pregnant woman’s death at Medinipur Medical College and Hospital has sparked outrage in West Bengal. The BJP has accused the state government of negligence after the woman reportedly received expired Ringer’s Lactated (RL) saline.
The victim, 25-year-old Mamoni Ruidas, died on Friday, while four other pregnant women who also received the expired saline remain critically ill. Among them, two are on ventilators, one is in the Critical Care Unit (CCU), and another is in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Doctors have reported no improvement in their conditions as of Saturday.
Controversial Supplier Under Scrutiny
The expired saline allegedly came from Paschim Banga Pharmaceutical Limited, a company previously banned by Karnataka and later by West Bengal. Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has held the firm accountable, demanding an investigation by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) and the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).

Adhikari also alleged the company bypassed regulations and secured state contracts due to its links with the ruling Trinamool Congress.
Health Department Faces Backlash
The incident has placed the West Bengal health department under intense scrutiny. In response, the state has formed a 13-member inquiry committee to investigate how expired saline was administered.
This tragedy has reignited concerns about the state’s healthcare system. Similar issues recently emerged at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, where former principal Sandip Ghosh was accused of using expired drugs for financial gain.
With public outcry mounting, calls for accountability and systemic reforms in the healthcare sector are growing louder.
