Bihar Floods: Ganga May Cross Highest Flood Level At Patna, Hathidah As Rivers Rise

The flood situation in Bihar worsened on Friday, with several rivers rising and inundating fresh areas.

The Water Resources Department said the Ganga could cross its Highest Flood Level (HFL) at Gandhi Ghat in Patna and Hathidah in Mokama by Friday night.

The Disaster Management Department has urged people in low-lying and riverbank areas of Bhojpur, Patna, Saran, Vaishali, Nalanda, Begusarai, Lakhisarai and Jehanabad to remain alert.

In Patna, the Ganga was 1.17 metres above the danger mark at Digha, 1.67 metres at Gandhi Ghat and 1.32 metres at Hathidah.

Punpun was 2.29 metres above the danger level at Shripalpur, while Dardha stood 3.07 metres above it at Kolhachak.

Bhagalpur recorded a 15 cm rise in the Ganga over 24 hours, flooding parts of Nathnagar, Naugachia and Pirpainti again. Agricultural fields, crops and fodder have been submerged.

Khagaria remains severely affected, with the Ganga 1.01 metres above the danger mark. The Kosi, Bagmati and Burhi Gandak are also running above danger levels.

Flooding has caused erosion near a railway line in Raghopur after most of a marginal embankment gave way. The Ganga has, however, moved dangerously close to the tracks.

Munger recorded a 36 cm rise in the Ganga in 24 hours. Nearly one lakh people have been affected in Alamnagar and Chausa in Madhepura. Officials are using 35 boats for relief and rescue operations.

A bridge diversion near Barsanda in Banka was washed away by the Mirchni River. Several villages in Saharsa are also flooded.

Road links have been disrupted in West Champaran, Samastipur, Patna and Vaishali. Water is 2–3 feet deep on the Yogapatti-Chhota Chaumukha-Siswa Mangalpur road, while around 20 panchayats in Raghopur have lost road connectivity.
