According to data released by the Election Commission of India, Bihar recorded a voter turnout of 27.65% till 11 AM during the first phase of the assembly polls.
Begusarai district reported the highest turnout at 30.37%, followed closely by Lakhisarai at 30.32%. Patna, however, recorded one of the lowest polling figures at 23.71%.
Other districts showing strong participation included Gopalganj (30.04%), Buxar (28.02%), Khagaria (28.96%), Muzaffarpur (29.66%), and Saharsa (29.68%).
Moderate turnout was recorded in Bhojpur (26.76%), Darbhanga (26.07%), Munger (26.68%), and Nalanda (26.86%), while Sheikhpura (26.04%) saw one of the lowest figures among smaller districts.
In a historic development, voting took place for the first time in 20 years in the Naxal-affected Bhimband area of Munger district. Locals expressed their joy and gratitude, citing peace and improved security conditions.
A resident said, “We are very happy to have voted here for the first time in 20 years. Earlier, the situation was unfavourable, but now there is no fear. Government facilities are better, and we have been living peacefully.”
Another villager, Neelam Kumari, added that the polling booth’s proximity made it convenient, thanking the Election Commission for the improved arrangements.
Prominent Leaders Cast Their Votes
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar exercised his franchise in Bakhtiyarpur, proudly displaying his inked finger to the media. He arrived at the polling booth accompanied by his entourage.
Deputy Chief Ministers Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Sinha also cast their votes in their respective constituencies — Tarapur (Munger) and Lakhisarai. Former Chief Minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, his wife Rabri Devi, and their son Tejashwi Yadav, the Mahagathbandhan’s chief ministerial face, cast their votes in Patna.
Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) leader and Mahagathbandhan’s deputy CM face Mukesh Sahani urged citizens to come out in large numbers, calling voters the ‘true owners of democracy’.
The first phase of the 2025 Bihar assembly elections began at 7:00 AM across 121 constituencies in 18 districts.
Nearly 3.75 crore electors are eligible to vote. Polling will conclude at 6 PM, although in certain constituencies with security sensitivities, voting will close at 5 PM.
In the 2020 Bihar Assembly elections, polling was conducted in three phases.
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured 125 seats, while the Mahagathbandhan (MGB) won 110. Among major parties, the JD(U) won 43 seats, the BJP 74, and the Congress 19.
The ongoing elections mark a crucial moment for Bihar as voters decide between continuity and change amid promises of development, employment, and stability.
