On January 22, India celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Abhiyaan, a campaign aimed at protecting, educating, and empowering the girl child in the country. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2015, from Panipat, Haryana, the campaign has achieved significant milestones in the past decade, aligning with India’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
The campaign’s completion of ten years marks a crucial shift from women-centric development to women-led development, highlighting the Modi government’s focus on enabling women to lead societal change.
The BBBP initiative was launched in response to the declining child sex ratio (CSR) and gender imbalance in India. Over the years, the program has significantly changed societal attitudes toward gender equality. It has fostered a culture where women and girls are empowered to pursue their aspirations without fear of discrimination. The movement has instilled pride and confidence among women and their families, contributing to broader gender equality.
A remarkable achievement of the BBBP initiative is the rise in women entrepreneurship. Today, women own approximately 1.4 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), reflecting growing opportunities for women to lead businesses and contribute to the economy. This transformation highlights the growing role of women as key drivers of India’s development.

The ten-year journey of BBBP has delivered impressive results, as documented by government figures. Key accomplishments include:
In addition to these achievements, the BBBP campaign has undertaken impactful initiatives that showcase the empowerment of women. These include the Yashaswini Bike Expedition, highlighting women’s strength and independence, and the Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav, which successfully re-enrolled over 100,000 out-of-school girls. Another key event, the National Conference on Skilling: Betiyan Bane Kushal, emphasized the importance of workforce participation for women.
The journey of BBBP underscores the Modi government’s commitment to building a Viksit Bharat (developed India), where women are no longer just beneficiaries but active leaders of change. This approach aims to create a more inclusive future, ensuring that every girl child has the opportunity to achieve her full potential.
The BBBP initiative has not only promoted education and equality but also helped women break barriers in male-dominated fields. Today, women are making strides in areas such as the police force, armed forces, and entrepreneurship, challenging traditional gender roles. The campaign has mobilized government agencies, civil society, media, and the public to combat gender discrimination and foster a cultural shift toward valuing the girl child.
As India celebrates the tenth anniversary of the BBBP initiative, the progress made is evident. The policy shift has created an environment where girls are not only pursuing their dreams but also achieving them, setting the stage for a more equal and empowered society. With continued efforts and support, the future holds even greater promise for the girl child in India.
