On January 22, India celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Abhiyaan, a campaign aimed at protecting, educating, and empowering the girl child in the country. Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2015, from Panipat, Haryana, the campaign has achieved significant milestones in the past decade, aligning with India’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.
The campaign’s completion of ten years marks a crucial shift from women-centric development to women-led development, highlighting the Modi government’s focus on enabling women to lead societal change.
The BBBP initiative was launched in response to the declining child sex ratio (CSR) and gender imbalance in India. Over the years, the program has significantly changed societal attitudes toward gender equality. It has fostered a culture where women and girls are empowered to pursue their aspirations without fear of discrimination. Today, women own approximately 1.4 million Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), reflecting growing opportunities for women to lead businesses and contribute to the economy. - Improvement in Sex Ratio at Birth: The national sex ratio at birth has improved from 918 in 2014-15 to 930 in 2023-24.
- Higher Girl Enrollment in Education: The gross enrollment ratio of girls at the secondary level has increased from 75.51% in 2014-15 to 78% in 2023-24.
- Increased Institutional Deliveries: Institutional deliveries have surged from 61% to 97.3%, while first-trimester antenatal care registrations have improved from 61% to 80.5% in the past decade.
In addition to these achievements, the BBBP campaign has undertaken impactful initiatives that showcase the empowerment of women. These include the Yashaswini Bike Expedition, highlighting women’s strength and independence, and the Kanya Shiksha Pravesh Utsav, which successfully re-enrolled over 100,000 out-of-school girls. Another key event, the National Conference on Skilling: Betiyan Bane Kushal, emphasized the importance of workforce participation for women.
