The Bar Council of India (BCI) has taken significant action against fake lawyers by canceling the registrations of 107 individuals from Delhi. Under the Bar Council of India Certificate and Practice (Verification) Rules, 2015, these lawyers were found unfit to meet the standards required for legal practice. Consequently, their names have been removed from the BCI’s rolls.
Action Based on Thorough Verification
The crackdown follows a comprehensive investigation, during which several lawyers with fraudulent or non-compliant practices were identified and de-registered. BCI has urged all State Bar Councils to remain vigilant when accepting similar surrender applications, emphasizing strict scrutiny.
Many universities have also joined forces with the State Bar Councils, actively verifying degrees to detect unqualified individuals. This collaborative effort is expected to lead to the removal of additional fake lawyers in the coming months.
Enhanced Rules to Uphold Legal Integrity
The process aligns with Rule 32 of the Bar Council of India Certificate and Place of Practice Rules, 2015. An amendment to Rule 32, introduced on June 23, 2023, has further strengthened BCI’s approach to transparency and accountability within the legal profession.
Since 2019, hundreds of fake advocates have been barred from practicing after a rigorous investigation into their qualifications. The BCI states that this ongoing process is essential to maintaining public trust and safeguarding the legal system from unethical practices.
