Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of the late former Foreign Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, is poised to step into the political arena in the forthcoming elections. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its initial candidate roster, confirming Ms. Swaraj’s candidacy for the New Delhi Lok Sabha constituency.
Upon the announcement of her candidacy, Ms. Swaraj expressed her commitment to upholding her mother’s esteemed legacy, believing firmly in her blessings from above.
“I am humbled by the blessings of my mother, Sushma Swaraj. However, this achievement is not solely mine but a testament to the dedication of every Delhi BJP worker,” Ms. Swaraj shared with sources.
With a distinguished career in law, Bansuri Swaraj brings substantial expertise to her political debut. She was appointed as the co-convenor of BJP Delhi’s legal cell last year, underscoring her proficiency in legal matters.

Having commenced her legal journey in 2007 with enrollment in the Bar Council of Delhi, Ms. Swaraj pursued her undergraduate studies in English Literature at the University of Warwick. Subsequently, she obtained a law degree from the renowned BPP Law School in London, qualifying as a Barrister at Law and being called to the bar from the Hon’ble Inn of Inner Temple, London. Further enriching her legal acumen, she completed her Master of Studies at the University of Oxford’s St. Catherine’s College.
Throughout her professional tenure, Bansuri has distinguished herself in the legal sphere, representing prominent clients in contentious litigations spanning contracts, real estate, tax matters, international commercial arbitrations, and criminal trials.

Ms. Swaraj garnered attention last year for her vocal criticism of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government regarding the National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023. At a press conference in the capital, she lambasted the AAP administration as “quarrelsome” and “ineffective,” highlighting what she perceived as their lack of efficiency since 2015. She commended President Droupadi Murmu for enacting the Bill, expressing optimism that governance in Delhi would align with legal mandates.
In a strategic move to gain an early advantage ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and pursue its ambitious goal of securing 370 seats, the BJP released a list of 195 candidates even before the poll dates were announced. Notable figures in the lineup include Prime Minister Narendra Modi, contesting from Varanasi for the third consecutive time, and Home Minister Amit Shah, fielded again from Gandhinagar, Gujarat.
