Delhi’s Minister, Atishi, has urgently reached out to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, seeking immediate intervention to address a critical shortfall in water supply from the state.
Urgent Appeal For Intervention
In a letter penned to the Haryana CM, Atishi warned of an impending water crisis in the national capital if the issue remains unresolved within the next one to two days.
The correspondence highlighted the recent dip in water release from the Munak Canal by Haryana, which serves as a vital source for Delhi’s water needs.
Atishi underscored the severe repercussions of this shortage on the residents of Delhi, who are already grappling with insufficient water availability.
Citing agreements established in the 53rd meeting of the Upper Yamuna River Board in May 2018, Atishi emphasized Delhi’s entitlement to approximately 1050 Cusec (equivalent to 568 MGD) of water at Munak through CLC and DSB Canals.
However, the recent decline in water flow has fallen significantly short of this allocation, exacerbating the strain on Delhi’s water resources.
Atishi provided technical insights into the assessment conducted by Delhi authorities, highlighting the measurement of water flow at the Bawana contact point.
Even during summer months, this flow typically ranges between 980 and 1030 cusecs, as verified by representatives of the Upper Yamuna River Board.
Such measurements underscore the glaring disparity between the allocated and actual water supply to Delhi.
The Delhi Minister further elucidated the cascading effects of this shortfall, noting that seven Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) in Delhi are heavily reliant on Yamuna water for their operations.
With the diminishing supply from the Munak Canal, these treatment plants are unable to operate at their optimal capacity, exacerbating the looming crisis.
Meanwhile, expressing grave concern over the situation, Atishi implored the Haryana Chief Minister to ensure the immediate release of 1,050 cusecs of water from the Munak Canal for Delhi.
