Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the formation and swearing-in of the new BJP-led government in the state will take place after May 11, once all constitutional and organisational formalities are completed.
CM Sarma made the remarks after submitting his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya. The resignation came following the Election Commission’s official notification of the Assembly poll results.
The Chief Minister said he resigned in keeping with democratic traditions after the Election Commission formally declared the results and submitted the notification to the Governor. He also recommended the dissolution of the present Assam Legislative Assembly.
The Governor accepted both recommendations. He also requested the outgoing Council of Ministers to continue as a caretaker government until the new administration assumes office.
The Chief Minister confirmed that the current government will function in this interim capacity during the transition. He indicated that while discussions suggest a possible swearing-in around May 12, the ceremony will not take place before May 11.
CM Sarma added that the exact date is yet to be officially confirmed.
A meeting of the BJP Legislature Party will be held in the presence of central observers, including JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini. The meeting will elect the party’s legislative leader, which will be followed by an NDA meeting to endorse the candidate.
The Governor will then invite the elected leader to form the government. Decisions regarding the composition of the new Cabinet will be taken only after these steps are completed.
The BJP-led NDA has secured a comfortable majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The result paves the way for the alliance’s return to power.
