Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi and his wife, Sunita Dwivedi, President of the Army Wives Welfare Association (AWWA), pledged to donate their organs at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) on 20 August.
Their commitment has given a major push to the Armed Forces Organ Retrieval & Transplantation Authority (AORTA), a pioneering initiative to promote awareness and inspire the Armed Forces community to lead the nation in organ donation.
Under the leadership of Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS), Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, AORTA has positioned itself as a national leader in organ retrieval and transplant efforts.
The Indian Army already holds a remarkable record, with more than 26,000 personnel pledging their organs in a single campaign.
Speaking at the event, General Dwivedi described organ donation as an ultimate service to humanity and an extension of the Armed Forces’ spirit of sacrifice and courage.
He encouraged service personnel and their families to set an example for society by actively supporting organ donation.
The Army Chief also commended AORTA for its tireless efforts in creating awareness and motivating Armed Forces personnel to contribute to this noble cause.
Recognition of Healthcare Workers
Acknowledging the vital role of healthcare workers in organ transplant care, General Dwivedi presented on-the-spot Chiefs Recommendation Cards to three frontline staff, including a housekeeper recognised for maintaining hygiene and sanitation for patients.
The gesture highlighted the Army Medical Corps’ ethos of compassion and commitment to patient welfare.
The event also included a solemn tribute to donor families whose generosity has given the gift of life to others.
Families of organ donors were felicitated for their courage and compassion, reinforcing the larger message of selfless service to society.
With strong institutional backing and increasing pledges from personnel, AORTA continues to expand its role as a driving force in India’s organ donation movement.
The Army Chief and AWWA President pledged to inspire many more within the Armed Forces and beyond to join the initiative, potentially saving countless lives across the country.
