AMRUT 2.0 Allocates Rs 66,750 Crore To Make Cities ‘Water Secure’

To make cities ‘self-reliant’ and ‘water secure’, the government has allocated Rs 66,750 crore for projects under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) 2.0 scheme, the Parliament was informed on Monday.

Tokhan Sahu, Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, shared in a written response to the Rajya Sabha that Rs 63,976.77 crore has approved for states/UTs, with Rs 11,756.13 crore already released.

As of now, states and UTs have utilized Rs 6,539.45 crore of the central share, with a total expenditure of Rs 17,089 crore when factoring in the state’s contribution.

The authorities have reported the physical completion of works worth Rs 23,016.30 crore.

The total indicative outlay for AMRUT 2.0 is Rs 2,99,000 crore, which includes central assistance of Rs 76,760 crore over the next five years.

Launched on 1 October 2021, the scheme aims to provide universal sewerage and septage management coverage in 500 cities.

Other components include the rejuvenation of water bodies, development of green spaces and parks, and a technology sub-mission focused on the latest water technologies.

The states and UTs have issued tenders for 5,886 projects worth Rs 1,15,872.91 crore, and awarded contracts for 4,916 projects totaling Rs 85,114.01 crore, according to the latest updates.

The remaining projects are in various stages of implementation.

To ensure effective monitoring, independent review and monitoring agencies (IRMAs) are assessing the progress of these large-scale infrastructure projects.

Additionally, the government has set up a dedicated online portal to track the implementation of AMRUT 2.0 projects.
