Amit Shah To Inaugurate Conference On Extradition Of Fugitives In Delhi

Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will inaugurate a two-day conference on ‘Extradition of Fugitives: Challenges and Strategies’ in New Delhi on Thursday, October 16. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is organising the event.

The conference will bring together senior officers from central and state police forces, officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and other stakeholders.

Discussions will centre on strengthening international police cooperation to trace and return fugitives wanted in India.

Deliberations over the two days will cover the effective use of formal and informal channels for international collaboration and leveraging technology to track fugitives. They will also focus on strategic approaches to extradition and analysis of offenders’ financial footprints.

Special sessions will focus on narcotics, terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime, and economic offences.

India’s Renewed Push Under PM Modi

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has prioritised international cooperation in criminal investigations.

In July, Amit Shah emphasised a coordinated approach to expedite the return of fugitives from abroad. The conference seeks to develop strategies to achieve this through legal and diplomatic channels in a time-bound manner.

Currently, India has over 300 extradition requests pending with foreign governments. Officials note that fugitives often exploit legal loopholes in host countries, and many belong to organised crime networks.

Shah had earlier launched the BHARATPOL portal, developed by the CBI. The portal integrates district police units, state police, central law enforcement agencies, and the CBI on a single platform to ensure seamless information exchange.

The conference aims to identify practical solutions to overcome extradition challenges and create a roadmap for the faster return of offenders. The CBI expects that the discussions will enhance coordination among agencies and strengthen India’s efforts to bring fugitives to justice.
