Amit Shah Targets Punjab Government Over Drugs And Gangsterism; Demands Answers

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday criticised the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government over drug trafficking, gangsterism and organised crime, demanding accountability for public safety and stronger action against criminal networks.

In a post on X, Amit Shah referred to two incidents in Punjab: a father in Dirba who allegedly consumed poison under pressure and the broad-daylight killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhotta in Mansa. He said Jhotta’s father had levelled serious allegations against the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and its MLA.

Amit Shah added that the Union Home Ministry would seek responses from the Punjab government on both incidents. He called for decisive action against drug networks and an impartial investigation into alleged political patronage for criminals.

Addressing Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, the Home Minister said people wanted answers and concrete results rather than announcements. He reiterated his commitment to making Punjab drug-free, gangster-free and secure if the BJP formed the government in the state.

Punjab Police, meanwhile, suspended City-2 Police Station SHO Beant Kaur and arrested Neelam Rani, wife of the alleged shooter, on Thursday, two days after Jhotta’s murder.

Police secured seven days of remand for alleged shooter Ashwani Kumar and his associate Vipin Kumar. Another associate, Laadi, was also arrested.

Mansa Senior Superintendent of Police Vaibhav Choudhary said Ashwani Kumar switched off his mobile phone after the shooting and fled with assistance from Laadi and Vipin Kumar. Police later arrested him in Salasar, Rajasthan.

The investigation is ongoing as the killing draws attention to drug trafficking, organised crime and law enforcement in Punjab.
