Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) have successfully planted seven crore trees over the past seven years, describing the achievement as a major contribution to India’s environmental goals. He shared the update while addressing a large-scale tree plantation programme in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
Highlighting the Centre’s commitment to sustainable development, Shah said the afforestation campaign demonstrates that environmental protection remains a national priority. He also said the government planted 43 lakh saplings in Delhi Ridge earlier this week as part of its broader efforts to expand the country’s forest cover.
Shah said the plantation drive focuses exclusively on indigenous tree species that are capable of surviving for more than 100 years. He noted that trees such as banyan and peepal play a vital role in absorbing carbon dioxide while providing food, shelter and nesting spaces for birds and supporting the natural ecosystem.
The Union Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign has transformed Ahmedabad’s plantation drive into a mass movement. He stated that over 1.37 lakh people from the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency registered online to plant five trees each, while more than 28,500 residents from Ahmedabad’s other parliamentary constituencies also joined the initiative.
Shah thanked private organisations for taking responsibility for nurturing thousands of newly planted trees over the next three years. He added that the inauguration of 101 Oxygen Parks across Ahmedabad will strengthen biodiversity by creating healthier habitats for birds, butterflies and other wildlife.
The plantation campaign was organised alongside the launch and foundation stone laying of several civic infrastructure projects across the city.
