On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah conducted a review meeting in New Delhi to assess the progress of implementing new criminal laws in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting, held at North Block, was attended by J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and J-K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.
It focused on the current status of various provisions related to police, jails, courts, prosecution, and forensics under the three new criminal laws:
- Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023
- Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023
- Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), 2023
These laws have replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Indian Evidence Act.
The meeting also saw the participation of senior officials, including the Union Home Secretary, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, Director General of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), and officials from the Union Home Ministry and the UT government.
Earlier in February, Amit Shah had reviewed the implementation of these laws in Maharashtra with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging swift implementation across all commissionerates.
Over the past few months, Shah has held similar meetings with several other states, including Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Haryana, to expedite the application of the new criminal laws.
In previous discussions with state representatives, the Home Minister emphasized the importance of these laws in ensuring timely justice, with the goal of delivering verdicts within three years from the filing of a First Information Report (FIR) to the highest court.
