Union Home Minister Amit Shah has categorically rejected former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s allegations regarding government directives aimed at undermining the authority of the elected government in the Union Territory.
Abdullah had claimed that the government had instructed the Chief Secretary of J&K to alter the rules of business, thereby enhancing the powers of the Lieutenant Governor at the expense of the Chief Minister and his council.
In a statement posted on the social media platform X, Abdullah suggested that the BJP had conceded defeat in the upcoming J&K elections, alleging that the directive to revise the rules of business was a strategy to weaken the newly elected government.
He stated, “The BJP has clearly accepted defeat in J&K. Why else would the Chief secretary assigned the duty to change transaction of business rules of the government to curtail the powers of the Chief minister / elected government and assign the same to the LG? This information has come to me from within the Secretariat. Officers would well advised to resist any pressure to further disempower the incoming elected government.”
In response, Shah dismissed Abdullah’s remarks as unfounded, asserting that they were based on misinformation.
Taking to X, Shah clarified, “Mr. @OmarAbdullah’s tweet is misleading and speculative in nature. There is not even an iota of truth, as there is absolutely no such proposal. The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganization Act of 2019 passed by the Parliament of India provides for notifying the transaction of business rules, and the same was notified in the year 2020. The people of J&K have wholeheartedly supported the efforts of the Government of India to bring in a democratically elected government through the historic free and fair election process in which the citizens participated enthusiastically.”
In a related development, the BJP has convened a meeting of key party leaders in Delhi to strategize the formation of the government in J&K following the elections.
Sources within the BJP revealed that 13 prominent leaders from the J&K unit have been summoned for a critical meeting scheduled for Saturday, to be led by BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda.
Attendees will include the party’s election in-charge and Union Minister G Krishna Reddy, along with other senior figures such as Ram Madhav, J&K in-charge, Tarun Chugh, co-in-charge, and Ravinder Raina, the J&K BJP President.
The assembly will also feature the participation of two former Deputy Chief Ministers, Kavinder Gupta and Dr. Nirmal Singh, as well as other notable party members.
Meanwhille, the meeting aims to gather insights from the recent Assembly elections and formulate strategies for establishing a government in J&K.
Discussions will also consider potential collaborations with independent candidates who may have a favorable chance of winning in their respective constituencies.
Sources indicated that Ram Madhav has been tasked with reaching out to various parties to explore alliances that could facilitate the BJP’s governance in the Union Territory, drawing on his previous experience in forming the BJP-PDP alliance following the 2014 elections.
