Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday intensified his attack on the Congress while addressing an election rally in Patharkandi in Assam’s Sribhumi district, asserting that the BJP remains the only party capable of safeguarding the state from illegal infiltration and preserving its cultural identity.
He stated that the BJP government has already identified infiltrators and pledged that they would be removed one by one if the party returns to power. Shah alleged that illegal migrants were depriving local youth, poor families, and tea garden workers of jobs, ration benefits, and wages.
Shah accused the Congress of engaging in vote bank politics by backing infiltrators. He claimed that earlier Congress governments weakened legal safeguards by repealing the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950 and introducing the IMDT Act in 1983, which he said protected illegal migrants.
He also criticised the party for opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), stating that it was necessary to protect persecuted minorities. Highlighting regional political dynamics, Shah said that with BJP-NDA governments in Assam, West Bengal, and Tripura, infiltration could be completely halted.
Cultural Identity And Political Jabs
The Home Minister reiterated the BJP’s role in renaming Karimganj as Sribhumi, linking the move to the region’s cultural heritage. He also launched a personal attack on Rahul Gandhi, alleging that the Congress under his leadership has declined in public discourse.
Referring to recent remarks by Congress leaders, Shah accused them of insulting BJP supporters and Gujarat, calling such statements undemocratic.
Reaffirming the BJP’s commitment, he said the party is focused on protecting Assam’s land, identity, and economic interests. He urged voters to reject what he described as the divisive and appeasement-driven politics of the Congress, expressing confidence that Assam would deliver a decisive mandate in favour of the BJP.
