Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the Centre issued a gazette notification granting Amaravati statutory status as the sole capital of the state.
The move follows President Droupadi Murmu giving assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, passed by Parliament last week.
In a post on X, Naidu thanked the Union government, Members of Parliament, state leaders, and citizens, calling the development a ‘victory’ for the people of Andhra Pradesh, particularly farmers of Amaravati.
He also acknowledged the President’s approval as a fulfilment of the state’s long-standing aspiration for a permanent capital.
On behalf of my people of Andhra Pradesh, I express profound gratitude to Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu Ji for her gracious assent to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Act, 2026, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of our capital.
I thank the Union Government…

According to the Ministry of Law and Justice notification, the Act is deemed effective from June 2, 2024. It amends the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, replacing earlier provisions to clearly designate Amaravati as the capital.
The definition of Amaravati includes areas notified under the Capital Region Development Authority framework.
Parliament approved the Bill on April 2, with the Rajya Sabha clearing it through a voice vote after passage in the Lok Sabha.
The legislation resolves years of uncertainty following Andhra Pradesh’s bifurcation in 2014 and rules out any reconsideration of the previously proposed three-capital model.
While most MPs supported the Bill, members of the YSR Congress Party opposed it, citing concerns over farmers who contributed land for the capital’s development.
The TDP government laid the foundation of Amaravati in 2015, halted work in 2019, and revived it after the NDA returned to power in 2024.
