Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday paid tribute to Rashtrakavi Ramdhari Singh Dinkar on his birth anniversary, recalling the poet’s contribution to Hindi literature and his role in shaping national consciousness.
Dinkar was born on September 23, 1908, in Simaria, Bihar, and became one of the prominent voices of modern Hindi poetry.
In a post on X, Shah said Dinkar’s immortal works gave a new direction to the nation’s consciousness. He highlighted the combination of a call for freedom and deep human compassion in the poet’s writings.
Shah particularly referred to Dinkar’s celebrated works ‘Rashmirathi’ and ‘Kurukshetra’, noting how the poet connected episodes from mythology with contemporary questions and offered fresh perspectives to successive generations.

‘Rashmirathi’ explores Karna’s story, while ‘Kurukshetra’ examines war, morality and human values. Dinkar’s works reflected nationalism, social concerns and patriotism.
He received the Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan and the Jnanpith Award in 1972 for ‘Urvashi’.
Shah said Dinkar’s writings would continue to inspire pride, courage and patriotism. His tribute came as political leaders and public figures marked the birth anniversary of the celebrated Hindi poet on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also paid tributes to Dinkar, recalling the enduring influence of his literary works.
