Union Home Minister Amit Shah held discussions with Chief Ministers on Friday, instructing them to identify all Pakistani nationals residing in their states and ensure their immediate return to Pakistan.
According to sources, this directive comes as part of a broader push to address national security concerns.
The Home Minister also announced the cancellation of all visas with immediate effect, further emphasising the need for swift action to facilitate the departure of Pakistani nationals.
This move is part of ongoing efforts to tighten security and manage foreign nationals within the country.
In related developments, Amit Shah will likely hold a crucial meeting on the Indus Water Treaty at his residence.
The meeting will involve the Union Minister for Jal Shakti, CR Patil, and other senior government officials.
Sources revealed that India has formally notified Pakistan of its decision to suspend the Indus Water Treaty, which has governed water sharing between the two countries since 1960.
The notification was communicated in writing by Devashree Mukherjee, Secretary of the Ministry of Jal Shakti, to Syed Ali Murtaza, the Secretary of Pakistan’s Ministry of Water Resources.
The letter outlined India’s position on the treaty, citing significant changes in population demographics, the push for clean energy, and other factors that necessitate a reassessment of water distribution agreements.
India has invoked Article XII (3) of the treaty, seeking modifications due to these evolving circumstances.
The Indian government’s action follows the tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on 22 April, which resulted in the deaths of 26 tourists and left several others injured.
The attack, which targeted tourists at Baisaran meadow, has sparked widespread condemnation and reinforced India’s security measures.
