Home Minister Amit Shah has made it clear that Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, will not be restored. Shah called the provision “a thing of the past,” stating that it has now “become history.” Article 370 was revoked in 2019, and its restoration is a key promise in the manifesto of the National Conference, which is contesting the upcoming Assembly elections in alliance with the Congress.
Article 370’s Historical Significance
The National Conference’s promise to bring back Article 370 contrasts with the BJP’s firm stance. These Assembly elections, the first since 2014, are being closely watched to gauge the public’s opinion on the abrogation of Article 370. Jammu and Kashmir was bifurcated into two Union Territories—J&K and Ladakh—following the provision’s removal. The central government has assured that Jammu and Kashmir will regain statehood soon.
BJP’s Longstanding Focus on Jammu and Kashmir
During a two-day visit to the region, Shah emphasized Jammu and Kashmir’s significance to the BJP since India’s Independence. He stated that until 2014, separatism and terrorism were constant threats to the region. “But the period from 2014 to 2024 will be remembered as a golden era for Jammu and Kashmir,” he said, crediting the BJP’s efforts.
Opposition to Separatist Influence
Amit Shah also pointed out how, in the past, Article 370 allowed governments to yield to separatist demands. He said that under Article 370 and Article 35-A, Jammu and Kashmir’s legislature had the right to define permanent residents and offer special privileges. However, with the provisions now removed, Shah believes the region is moving towards greater development.

Firm Stand Against Article 370’s Return
The minister reiterated that the abrogation of Article 370 has led to the development of the region, particularly under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. Shah also criticized the National Conference’s manifesto, accusing the Congress of giving “silent support” to it. He firmly stated, “Article 370 is history. It will never return.”
BJP’s Vision for Jammu and Kashmir
Looking ahead to the elections, Shah highlighted the BJP’s focus on a “peaceful, safe, developed, and prosperous” Jammu and Kashmir. The Assembly elections will be held in three phases between September 18 and October 1, with the results to be announced on October 8.
