Amid BJP’s Contemplation of New Chief Minister, Shivraj Chouhan Offers Subtle Clues

Amidst discussions over the BJP’s selection of chief ministers in the recently conquered heartland states, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, a four-time Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, seems to convey a nuanced message to the party leadership. Despite leading the BJP to a historic victory, Chouhan might not secure the role again, as the party contemplates a potential generational shift and explores alternative candidates.

During an event in Bhopal commemorating the death anniversary of BR Ambedkar, Chouhan remarked, “The BJP government is following the path shown by him (Ambedkar), under the leadership of Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, we are working for the welfare of the last person in society.” Many interpreted this as Chouhan subtly highlighting how his government’s welfare initiatives, such as “Ladli Behna,” contributed significantly to the election triumph.

With talks of the BJP considering fresh faces for chief ministership, Chouhan’s statement is seen in the context of the ongoing deliberations within the party. Despite his notable victory in Madhya Pradesh, Chouhan emphasizes his commitment to the party, stating he is “not in the race” for the chief ministerial position.

Chouhan’s focus on the upcoming general election, expressing a desire for the BJP to win all 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, adds another dimension to his political narrative. Mindful not to be perceived as lobbying for the top post, he refrains from visiting Delhi and concentrates on grassroots engagement.

Post his victory, Chouhan’s activities, such as inspecting night shelters and interacting with ‘Ladli Behna’ beneficiaries, project an image of a leader connected to the ground and detached from power struggles. As the BJP leadership engages in meetings to decide chief ministers for the heartland states, including Amit Shah and JP Nadda meeting key leaders, the discussions take center stage in the party’s strategic planning. A marathon meeting at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence underscores the significance of choosing frontrunners for the leadership roles in these states.
