Mulayam Singh Yadav, the founder of the Samajwadi Party, received the Padma Vibhushan today. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honor to Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav on his father’s behalf.

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and other Union ministers and other guests attended the event.

Among the 106 recipients of the Padma Award, this year are Sudha Murty, Zakir Hussain, Mulayam Singh Yadav, and KM Birla. On the evening before the 74th Republic Day, the government released the names.

The Padma Vibhushan, the second-highest civilian honor in the nation after the Bharat Ratna, was given to Mr. Yadav, the late founder of the Samajwadi Party, in the field of public affairs.

The Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri awards recognize extraordinary and distinguished service, high-order distinguished service, and excellent achievement in any field, respectively.

However, a number of Samajwadi Party leaders feel that the Padma Vibhushan award doesn’t do justice to the late leader’s reputation and that he deserved Bharat Ratna.

Leader of the Samajwadi Party and former BJP member Swami Prasad Maurya stated, “Netaji (as Yadav was affectionately known) should receive a Bharat Ratna. He is not deserving of the Padma Vibhushan, given his stature and character. He can still receive a Bharat Ratna from the government”.

Dimple Yadav, a member of parliament from Mainpuri and the daughter-in-law of Mulayam Singh Yadav, stated, “It will be our demand from the government to confer the Bharat Ratna on Netaji”.

After a protracted illness, the Samajwadi Party veteran and longtime politician passed away on October 10 of last year. Yadav, who was born on November 22, 1939, into a farming family in the Uttar Pradesh village of Saifai, close to Etawah, gave rise to the most powerful political dynasty in the region.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the three-time chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, also held the position of minister of defence for the Union from 1996 to 1998.
