Ahmedabad Plane Crash: IMA Calls On Tata Sons To Aid BJ Medical College Students Affected By Air India Crash

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Gujarat State Branch, urged Tata Sons to provide financial support to medical students at BJ Medical College (BJMC) who sustained injuries or lost their lives in the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 near Ahmedabad airport.

The crash, which claimed approximately 274 lives, has left the nation in mourning.

Several BJMC students were present on campus when the Boeing Dreamliner struck the hostel and mess building.

In the immediate aftermath, the crash traumatised students, suspended academic activities, and displaced hostel residents.

Many of the affected students were in the early years of their medical education.

Appeals Tata Sons for aid to the medical college Victims

In a letter addressed to Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, the IMA expressed appreciation for the company’s announcement of ₹1 crore compensation for the families of the deceased.

However, it went on to request further urgent assistance specifically for the injured and deceased medical students.

“We humbly request you to consider extending financial assistance and necessary support to the medical students present at the crash site who were injured or lost their lives in this unfortunate event,” the letter stated.

“These individuals were not only victims but also future pillars of our healthcare system, and their well-being and families deserve similar care and support,” it added.

Legal push for government compensation

Meanwhile, two doctors—Dr Saurav Kumar and Dr Dhruv Chauhan—have moved the Supreme Court, filing a petition that seeks immediate government intervention.

The plea requests the Centre to announce and disburse interim compensation of ₹50 lakh to the families of all deceased victims, including BJMC’s resident doctors.

The petition also calls on the government to ensure rehabilitation measures, such as employment for eligible family members of the deceased, and demands a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash.

It seeks accountability and proactive safety reforms to prevent future disasters.

The IMA’s appeal and the legal plea come amid growing public concern over the scale of the tragedy and the need to support those impacted.

As rescue and medical efforts continue at Civil Hospital, where BJMC doctors are working around the clock, the focus has shifted to long-term support and justice for the victims.

With attention now on Tata Sons and the Central Government, many await further announcements that could provide a sense of closure and relief to the grieving families and the shaken medical fraternity.
