NDA nominee and Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishnan was elected as the new Vice President on Tuesday. He secured 452 first-preference votes, defeating the opposition candidate Justice (Retd) B Sudarshan Reddy, who received 300 votes.
Rajya Sabha Secretary-General PC Mody announced the results.
South vs South Electoral Contest
The election drew attention as a rare ‘South vs South’ contest. Radhakrishnan hails from Tamil Nadu, while Justice Reddy comes from Telangana.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising both Houses of Parliament. This includes 233 elected and 12 nominated Rajya Sabha members, along with 543 Lok Sabha members.
Out of 782 members, 752 cast their votes, marking a strong turnout.
The election, however, followed the system of proportional representation through a single transferable vote and was conducted by secret ballot.
Both candidates were projected as leaders with contrasting strengths — Radhakrishnan as a grassroots leader with administrative experience and Justice Reddy as a legal mind with constitutional expertise.
NDA Secures Another Constitutional Post
Radhakrishnan’s victory adds to the NDA’s strength in holding top constitutional positions. His election came after the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar in July, whose term was set to run until 2027.
Radhakrishnan, a veteran leader from Tamil Nadu with close ties to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), now takes charge as India’s 15th Vice President and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
