The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) on Thursday cautioned international media houses against spreading unverified reports about the Air India Ahmedabad crash, calling such coverage ‘irresponsible and potentially damaging to the probe’s integrity’.
The warning came after the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) claimed that a cockpit recording from the ill-fated Air India flight allegedly suggested the captain cut the fuel supply to the engines.
In its statement, AAIB said, “It has come to our attention that certain sections of the international media are repeatedly attempting to draw conclusions through selective and unverified reporting. Such actions are irresponsible, especially while the investigation remains ongoing.”
The agency added that it is ‘too early to reach any definite conclusions’ and assured that the final report will identify root causes and include recommendations.

Earlier, the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) criticised the AAIB’s preliminary report, stating it failed to consider two documented technical scenarios that could have caused an automated engine shutdown. The association urged the Civil Aviation Ministry to include more experts in the investigation.
Meanwhile, ALPA-India defended the crew, stating they made every possible effort to protect passengers.
“They deserve respect, not unfounded character judgments,” the association said, calling for a ‘fact-based and respectful discourse’.
The AAIB said a detailed probe is underway, with the final report expected within 6–12 months as per ICAO norms. It urged the media to avoid speculation and wait for verified findings.
