Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday stressed that building an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ is essential for India’s progress, urging the country to reduce its dependence on other nations and strengthen its own capabilities.
Addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the 80th Independence Day, PM Modi said India must safeguard its interests through greater self-reliance. He highlighted initiatives such as ‘Make in India’, ‘Swadeshi’ and ‘Local for Local’ as part of the country’s push towards economic and technological independence.
The Prime Minister particularly highlighted the importance of semiconductor technology in today’s digital economy. He said chips are essential for a wide range of sectors, including electronic goods, medical equipment and transportation systems, making semiconductor self-reliance strategically important for India.
PM Modi said India had made significant progress in semiconductor manufacturing, with three major plants already established and production reportedly beginning for exports. He said India would establish five to eight more semiconductor plants over the next seven to eight years.
The Prime Minister said strengthening domestic semiconductor capabilities would help India reduce its dependence on foreign countries while creating new opportunities in technology and manufacturing.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat before heading to the Red Fort for the Independence Day celebrations.
This year’s celebrations featured ‘Vande Mataram’ at the Red Fort for the first time since Independence.
The national song was followed by the National Anthem, ‘Jana Gana Mana’, marking a significant moment in the official celebrations.
PM Modi’s emphasis on self-reliance and semiconductor manufacturing formed part of his broader vision for strengthening India’s technological capabilities, domestic production and economic resilience.
