Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat on Saturday, marking India’s 80th Independence Day. He recalled Gandhi’s enduring vision and reaffirmed his commitment to the progress and prosperity of every Indian.
After paying his respects, PM Modi shared a message on X. He said the nation would continue drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s life, ideals and work.

Later, Prime Minister Modi hoisted the National Flag at the Red Fort and addressed the nation. The ceremony featured a 21-gun salute and a ceremonial flower shower from a helicopter.
PM Modi opened his address by invoking ‘Vande Mataram’ and the Tricolour. He paid tribute to freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for India’s independence.
Prime Minister Modi offered his respects to Gandhi and other leaders of the freedom movement.
The Prime Minister highlighted the special significance of this year’s celebrations. He said ‘Vande Mataram’ echoed from the Red Fort for the first time since Independence.
The occasion marked 150 years of the national song.
Calling it a historic moment, PM Modi said the Red Fort’s Independence Day ceremony provided an appropriate setting to commemorate the song’s 150-year journey.
PM Modi’s tribute at Rajghat came ahead of his national address, where he outlined his broader vision for India’s development. He honoured the sacrifices and contributions of those who shaped the country’s freedom struggle.
