76 hostel students hospitalized for possible food poisoning in Noida after eating meals prepared for fasting

The students at Aryan Residency at Knowledge Park, an educational hub, celebrated Mahashivratri on Friday with ‘puris’ made of ‘kuttu ka atta’ (buckwheat flour), after which they complained of nausea, dizziness, and vomiting, police claimed.

Noida: 76 students were admitted to hospital on Saturday due to suspected food poisoning after eating food prepared for those observing Mahashivratri fast at a private hostel in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida.

Police claimed that students enrolled in various universities had dinner on Friday, after which many of them complained of nausea, dizziness, and vomiting.

Students at Aryan Residency, Knowledge Park, an educational center, celebrated Mahashivratri on Friday by eating ‘puris’ made from ‘kuttu ka atta’ (buckwheat flour). Local police are investigating the incident on Friday evening when around 76 students had dinner and then complained of stomach discomfort.

“All the students were taken to various hospitals and their condition is now stable,” police said in a statement. It said there was no law and order problem as a result of the incident and the matter was being investigated.

Meanwhile, a team from the local food safety agency reached the spot to inspect.

“The team will collect samples of the food and raw materials used to make the dinner.” An official said the samples would be analyzed and legal action would be taken as a result.

The students said that due to the fast they had cooked dinner separately.

“We had dinner at 9:30 pm. I started feeling dizzy at 10:30 pm and finally fell asleep.

Some friends noticed that many students were complaining of dizziness, restlessness, and vomiting,” said Piyush, a student recovering in a private hospital.

“Around midnight my body started shivering and I felt extremely hot and disoriented. After this, I and two of my family members were taken to the emergency room here.” Another student, Kushal, told reporters at Kailash Hospital that several others in his hostel were also vomiting.
